Architecture in the Tirol

8 GALZIG CABLEWAY Cableway The technique employed on the new Galzig cableway signifies a worldwide innovation. Huge wheels with a diameter of 9.3 m bring the gondolas down to the entrance level – stairs no longer have to be climbed for access. A lifting and turning movement in the opposite direction raises the gondolas which float up through the glazed area to the Galzig. This spectacular movement sequence can be observed through the powerful construction of glass and steel. The sweeping form of this glass hood resulted from the cableway technology developed for the installation. The foundation of the glass hood is of concrete which earths the building and, as it were, anchors it in the slope. The superstructure of glass stretches from one wall across the cableway to the other wall, thus producing the shape of a hood or protective sheath. Today, functionality imposes high optical standards, modernity does not compete with Alpine tradition. One of the best examples of this is the “Alpenhaus“ GALZIG CABLEWAY FACTBOX Site: St. Anton am Arlberg Architect: Georg Driendl Driendl Architects Wien Construction: 2006 28 gondolas, each holding 24 people, convey 2,000 passengers per hour up to the Galzig SPS-control system: ensures that the speed of the giant wheels and cable is adjusted to capacity. Another example of modern architecture at lofty heights is the “Pardorama“ on the Ischgl Pardatschgrat by architect Manfred Jäger. Our third example is by Klaus Mathoy - the “Hoadlhaus“ in the Axamer Lizum. Our final example of successful, high-altitude architecture is the Sunna Alm mountain restaurant, an energy-saving building on the Pitztal glacier by the DI Reiter architectural partnership.
