6 Architectonic Sensation The fascination of the ski jump completed in 2002 lies in the successful fusion of the architectonic with the sports and technical component of this unique site. All ski jumps are composed in the same way: they consist of a tower, the approach run and the takeoff point. Innsbruck‘s Bergisel jump is like no other, it has the effect of an organic entity, flowing, harmonious in its dynamism, its form vocabulary far surpassing any other ski jumps in the world. Zaha Hadid welded the approach ramp and the tower together to form a sculptural, elegant formation. The ramp coils around the upper end of the tower, leaving the horizontal to merge into the perpendicular of the tower head. Within, above the starting point beam is the public cafeteria and the roof terrace with panorama glazing. The shaft of the tower rises from a 16 by 20 metre foundation bearing three basement floors housing the technical section, storage and staff rooms as well as the entrance area. The visitors‘ lift leads up to the terrace level at 43.5 m. The jump approach ramp, a steel frame construction, has the effect of being hinged between the tower and the takeoff point.
