Architecture in the Tirol

4 Alpine Fusion Barely a year after its opening the new link from the city centre up to the Hungerburg has become a striking symbol of Innsbruck. It seems as though the Hungerburg cable railway wants to vie with its sister, Bergisel ski jump. Perhaps not surprisingly for public works of this dimension, the unusual design of the new cable railway initially caused controversy. The new link is by Zaha Hadid who needs no introduction. Following the Bergisel ski jump this is Hadid‘s second project in Innsbruck and with it she has conclusively hoisted this tranquil town to the heights of the architectural scene. Hadid is the undisputed trailblazer of the avant-garde, she is a planner who breaks most radically with conventional forms of construction. Her interpretation of architecture is visionary, it points deep into a seemingly faraway future. In Innsbruck she has realized two of her visions. The bottom stage of the new Hungerburg cable railway is located at Congress Innsbruck, only 200 m from the old town. Shortly after the start the railway dives into the first, short HUNGERBURG CABLE RAILWAY Altitude of bottom stage: 569 m Altitude of top stage: 857 m Length of railway line: 1,838 m Difference in altitude: 288 m Travelling time: 8.10 minutes Operating speed: 10 m/s Carriage capacity: 130 people Conveying capacity: 1,200 p/h Completion 2007 Building time: 2 years Alpenzoo Station | © Nordpark FACTBOX tunnel, again emerging into daylight at the Löwenhaus. It then winds across the spectacular new bridge and across the river Inn. The next tunnel has a gradient of 46%, but passengers scarcely notice this. Thanks to the hydraulic positioning, the cabins remain upright during the ride. The Alpenzoo station stands erect, a beacon in the night. The railway follows the steep alignment up to the Hungerburg top stage. It covers the entire 1,800 m stretch in barely 8 minutes via tunnels and bridges, generating its very own exciting rhythm in the process. Not only does it take passengers up to the heights of Innsbruck, but with every journey it completes an Alpine fusion – from underground to the midst of a mountain panorama that scores again and again as a postcard motif.
