Architecture in the Tirol

Architecture in the Tirol Like all architecture, building in the Alps is characterized by the environmental conditions: by life amidst mountains, by the climate and by the materials to be found in the immediate surroundings. Traditionally, this means using stone and wood, positioning buildings in sheltered situations and endeavouring to keep the wind and the weather at bay and to design comfortable interiors. The changing demands due to tourism in the 20th century were with few exceptions countered by a change in scale, but not in architecture. For a long time what is unflatteringly known as the „lederhosen style“ set the tone of the landscape. In recent decades, however, a radical aboutturn has occurred at all levels of architecture. Sports sites, administrative buildings, universities, hotels, viewing platforms, mountain restaurants, etc. bear witness to this trend towards an architecture in tune with the times. This has come about thanks to a lively Tirolean architectural scene and thanks to a readiness to take risks on the part of public and private developers. International architects like Zaha Hadid and Dominique Perrault have thus been able to create spectacular new symbols of the Tirol. At the same time a young generation of local architects has come to terms with the quality of building in the Alps, seeing it in relation to current trends. Wood, stone, glass and wide vistas have given this intensive approach to the surroundings a contemporary, yet specifically Tirolean appearance. Parkhotel Hall | © Parkhotel Hall 3
