16 LEARNING Clever buildings The paramount precept of the Social and Economic Faculty (SOWI) of the University of Innsbruck is – inward and outward – transparency. The faculty building by the Henke and Schreieck architectural partnership is thus characterized by this transparency. The shell and the substance of this striking, finely and carefully constructed concrete, steel and glass construction reveal glimpses in all directions. The old trees in the neighbouring Hofgarten are more or less omnipresent, glimpsed through lavish glazing, window strips and openings, from corridors and in lecture rooms. And enthroned above all are the Nordkette mountains. Opened up along its length and its breadth and featuring numerous glazed areas, the building makes for maximum transparency, its interior ensures that work can be carried out openly and in small groups. Many of the small teaching rooms have glass walls, giving an impression of exchange, of joint learning and research. The UMIT private University of Medicine, the second university building by Henke and Schreieck in the Tirol, is situated in a park on a slight slope at the edge of the old town of Hall. In deliberate contrast with the dramaturgy of the surroundings, the architects designed two abstract cubes with a 60 x 60 m ground plan for this site. The facades are characterized by lamellae providing protection from the sun and reaching up the height of the storeys. These buildings generate urbane density whilst leaving the landscape and the topography of the terrain intact. Since open-plan learning does not start or finish with the University, however, a whole series of modern schools and exhibition venues have been created in the Tirol in recent years.
