Architecture in the Tirol

14 KAUFHAUS TYROL Bone of contention and beacon of hope: Kaufhaus Tyrol For decades Kaufhaus Tyrol in Innsbruck‘s Maria-Theresien-Straße was the only real department store in the province, a magnet for shoppers long before the retail centres had developed on the edge of the town. Kaufhaus Tyrol was the place to go. The entire store took up three buildings next to each other in the Maria-Theresien-Straße, a protected zone since 1978 and very recently declared a listed ensemble. In the course of adaptation work two buildings were demolished and one left standing: the old Hotel Maria Theresia that dates from 1930. This has been renovated in the style of the 20s and has acquired two new floors at the top. They cleverly link the old building with the new section by British star architect David Chipperfield. The new design by Chipperfield initially preoccupied local people. The building‘s straight lines and many extensive glazed areas with a kink in the front make the façade seem like a large presentation area. Chipperfield himself spoke of an “architecture with windows“, aptly defining the character of the building – it is in the manner of the great, traditional department stores in the world. Completion is planned for spring 2010, an area of 30,000 sq. m will house some 50 shops as leaseholders. Further info Kaufhaus Tyrol entrance Erlerstraße | © SIGNA
